Wildflower Images

If you are checking this blog for the wildflower images, I have moved them to a new blog. I will keep this blog, DigitalRoanoke, for images of events in this area. The new blog for the wildflowers is Blue Ridge Wildflowers ( www.blueridgewildflowers.com ). I hope this will make it a bit easier to distinguish the intent of each blog.

Earth Hour - Did you participate?

Tonight was Earth Hour. It was from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. It is a time for people to cut off their lights and unneccessary electric devices to mark a stand against global warming and energy inefficiency. I did take part in this event, but I do not believe any of my neighbors did. It does not surprise me. .
At any rate, I tried to do my part, and I try to do it every day, not just Earth Hour. Do your part, and try to reduce your power consumption. Besides saving the planet, you will be saving money.

A Wet St. Patrick's Day Parade for 2009

I was going to photograph the 2009 St. Patrick's Day Parade for several reasons. One being the fact that my fellow Fire Fighters from the Roanoke Fire Fighters Association were in the parade, and second was for this blog, to document an event in the city of Roanoke. However, a set of circumstances conspired that morning to make me arrive late, and I managed to catch the last half of the parade as it traveled down Campbell Avenue toward Williamson Rd. The up side was I did get to see some of the parade. The down side was that most everyone was wet, cold, and tired at that point. The number of smiling faces was at a minimum. However, kudos to those who marched and participated in the parade, and those who braved the elements to watch.
Here are a few of the images that I captured on that cold, rainy Saturday morning.

Happy New Year from Digital Roanoke

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Be safe.

Roanoke Endures a Rubber Ball-valanche

It had all the makings for a really fun and unusual event. Evidently, I was not the only one to think so, as the citizens and press turned out in force for this occasion. The scenario was that people would each get a bunch of rubber balls and drop them all at the same time in the atrium of the Center in the Square at Noon on New Years Eve. Well, people were there, and the event went off without a hitch (that I am aware of). The children had a BLAST!!!. What else could you expect. Children and 11,000 rubber balls. Of course they had a blast. I think everyone did.
After the drop, the youngsters cleaned the floor of all rubber balls in an energetic frenzy, as the parents watched it all and wished that they could get their kids to clean their rooms with the same speed and intensity.
Here are some images of the event.

Pause in Posting

I apologize for the pause in posting here on this blog. I have been busy with astronomy, astronomy outreach, telescope building, guitar building and repair, as well as my regular, day to day activities. My music has taken a back seat as well, and I am aslo trying to remedy that situation. Here is an image I shot back in August 2004 as I was setting up for an astronomy class that I was giving to the general public. Evidently, these duck were interested in the telescope setup, but never took a turn looking through the eyepiece.

Merry Christmas Roanoke

I wanted to wish everyone in Roanoke, and everywhere else, for that matter, a very Merry Christmas. Please be safe and make the world a happier place.
